How To Install OpenOffice 3.2.1 In Ubuntu

Oracle and the OpenOffice community is preparing the next version of OpenOffice.org -- 3.2.1.

This is not a major upgrade to features but brings along some changes in the graphical user interface. After the acquisition of Sun Microsystems by Oracle all Sun Logos were replaced by Oracle Logos. Furthermore the OpenOffice.org logo was refreshed for the 3.2.1 release.

The user interface of IBM Lotus Symphony looks cool as compared to OpenOffice. OpenOffice needs heavy re-work in the look and feel department. Despite the punches it packs to beat MS Office, the look and feel is one area which in fact makes all those punches weak.

If Oracle does some Apple magic with
the user interface, OpenOffice will be a major force in the office suite space.

To install this version under Ubuntu please follow to below instructions.

1. Download OpenOffice 3.2.1 from here.

2. Extract content in Desktop.
3. Open Terminal. Goto terminal Applications>Accessories>Terminal

4. Become root by this command

muktware@muktware-desktop:~$ sudo su -
[enter password when asked]

5. Remove older OpenOffice
root@muktware-desktop:~# sudo apt-get remove openoffice*.*

6. Install extracted openoffice. Run following commands one by one.
root@muktware-desktop:~# sudo dpkg -i ~/Desktop/OOO320_m18_native_packed-1_en-US.9502/DEBS/* .deb

root@dragon-desktop:~# sudo dpkg -i ~/Desktop/OOO320_m18_native_packed-1_en-US.9502/DEBS/desktop-integration/openoffice.org3.2-debian-menus_3.2-9502_all.deb
